A percussion performance by Emilio Tamez Friday, Sept. 21, at Salon Mijangos, 1906 S. Flores, San Antonio TX 8 pm • $7 Improv_SA and Salon Mijangos are proud to present a performance by Monterrey percussionist Emilio Tamez. Tamez has been involved for many years in the development of an integrated art form of percussive sound. Ethnic textures and colors, sound-poetry, modern structuralism, jazz languages and free improvisation: it’s a work in progress/process. Emilio Tamez has been teaching and giving workshops for more than ten years in Monterrey, Mexico, where his currently resides. He has written five books on drumming expression and technique (unpublished), and has participated in many recordings. He has shared the stage in large ensembles along Gebhard Ulman, Rashied Ali, Jonathan Gollove, Ronnie Burrage, Felix Petry, Andrew Cyrille, Ramòn Lopez, Sonny Fortune, Ratzo Harris, among others. Tamez has performed in Mèxico, Japan, Germany, and the United States. On Friday, Tamez will perform three solo pieces and then do an improvised set with San Antonio musicians Jane Henry, violin; James Sidlo, electric guitar and Sanford Allen, resonator guitar. He also will also be conducting a musical improvisation workshop on Saturday, September 22 at Salon Mijangos. The seminar starts at 1 p.m. and costs $10.
