Moreau's creations were certainly the Remade of their day.

Wasn't the Michael York version a re-make of an earlier version?  I rememer a black & white version that played when I was a kid.  The cool thing about it was whenever something scary was about to happen a tiny bell would ring.  The bell was for the benefit of the viewing audience who may become too frightened by what was coming up.  Even as a kid, I though that was hilarious.

I believe that was called "The Island of Lost Souls" although it was clearly from the H.G. Wells novel. Bela Lugosi was the sayer of the law and Charles Laughton was the Doctor. I saw it a year or two ago on one of the movie channels. Still watchable in that classic 1930s monster movie way.

Found this in an article in which Mieville lists 50 SF writers every socialist should read.

Wow, thanks for the list!

And Paul, please don't ever ask me to "post a link."

Would you interpret that as "mail me a sausage"?

You can watch The Island of Doctor Moreau in it's entirety for free on the new Hulu.com web site.

Finished up Perdido ST Station... guess Sanford will be getting the well used copy back this week...  Can I borrow 'The Scar' from someone, or should I buy one?  I wouldn't mind he is a fine author.

Looking For Jake is also very good. I'm about half-way through it. It's not as mind-blowingly good as Perdido et al, but it is some tastey candy. The title story is a weird tale of a different kind of apocalypse, "Ball Room" is a story of horror at the Ikea store and "Familiar" is a great, sick take on a witch's animal companion. Worth reading.
