So, before John designs a cover, does he read the book, or just a synopsis?
From what I understand, he's one of a handful of artists who actually bother to read the books. A lot more work for him, obviously, because some (The Terror, for example) are pretty weighty and aren't quick reads.
A frequent complaint from authors is that they get saddled with covers that have no relation to the story. Mainly because the artist is flying by the seat of his/her pants.
